So with that in mind, I have some book recs for you that I tried to organize loosely by what you might be looking for next. I tend to think of my stuff in terms of what it is not: gritty, dark, tragic. People come back to my books because I have queer representation, and because they know there will be romance, found family, and an HEA – basically lots of Heroine’s Journeys. I believe that people read my stuff for comfort, because I’m gentle to my characters, and light and fluffy and funny. But after ten years I have some idea, so I hope you’ll humor my list attempts. It’s weird, Gentle Reader, to try to figure out what people like about one’s own books. As Irving notes in his Preface, "It was my endeavor scrupulously to depict its half Spanish, half Oriental character its mixture of the heroic, the poetic, and the grotesque to revive the traces of grace and beauty fast fading from its walls to record the regal and chivalrous traditions concerning those who once trod its courts and the whimsical and superstitious legends of the motley race now burrowing among its ruins." A must-read for modern-day visitors to the Alhambra, this edition presents a fascinating selection of Irving's observations and stories. The result is this captivating collection of essays, sketches, and tales. During his sojourn, the writer became increasingly enamored of the grand palace and its wealth of history and folklore. Care was taken to maintain local coloring and verisimilitude so that the whole might present a faithful and living picture of that. Irving became a guest at the ancient fortress, where he found himself in the company of several colorful inhabitants. Rough draughts of some of the following tales and essays were actually written during a residence in the Alhambra others were subsequently added, founded on notes and observations made there. While researching a book on the conquest of Granada, he gained access to the Alhambra Palace, which had fallen into disrepair after years of neglect. Upon his 1829 arrival in Granada, Spain, American author Washington Irving was immediately charmed by the city's beauty and picturesque qualities. But as is custom with Mori, it's really about so many more people than that. Emma was Mori's debut series, and when I was recently able to borrow the complete omnibus set from the library I decided it was time to finally give it a read.Īt its heart, Emma is a lord-and-maid forbidden romance set in the late Victorian era. Because of it I consider the author's signature style to be elaborately drawn details and backgrounds, an abundance of interesting historical minutiae, and occasional unnecessary female nudity. The digital US version appears to be for sale as 10 individual volumes as well.Īuthor Kaoru Mori's current ongoing series, A Bride's Story, about a traveling Englishman and the local families he meets in 19th-century Central Asia, is one of my favorites. The original Japanese release consisted of 10 volumes. Series/Purchase Note: This physical US edition consists of 5 omnibus volumes. Over the next two decades, Mick climbs the ladder of fame to dizzying heights, yet a family man (like his father before him), he is not. For those of you who haven’t, add those books to your to-be-read stacks - they are story gold! For those of you who’ve read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & the Six, the name Mick Riva will ring a bell. One of them gets their wish, and, surprisingly, it’s the rockstar one. June with ambitions of having a family and never working another day in her family’s beachside restaurant. June and Mick Riva got married young (emphasis on the young). Even if the location doesn’t evoke such wistfulness in you, Malibu Rising is a delicious family drama, and the quintessential summer read. Malibu Rising is set in the 80s, and I can’t say how much changed between those two decades, but the vibe of saltwater and ocean spray of driving along the Pacific Coast Highway of lemon-juice highlights and forever rinsing sand from your hair… Gosh, the nostalgia while reading this one was real. As a teenager in the 90s, I spent many summers in Southern California. Parts One and Two take place contiguously in the near future, with the same group of characters traversing a unified narrative arc. Set in the future, where large-scale engineering and physics play a central role in the action. Stephenson’s oeuvre, this book is classic hard science fiction. For him, an event that most of us would find unthinkable is where he starts the story. Seveneves proves once again that he possesses an imagination of staggering inventiveness and scope. This is especially true every time I read a novel from Mr. No one has the right to be this talented. There are certain people-artists, writers, performers, musicians-who are so breathtakingly good, such absolute masters of their craft, that I can only stand in awe of their work and think: Recently, I was lucky enough to get my hands on an Advance Reader’s Edition of Neal Stephenson’s upcoming novel, Seveneves. Advance Reader’s Edition, HarperCollins, 2015 He began putting on airs to live up to his important-sounding name, but after much teasing from his friends, soon returned to his original name, because, as he put it, "There's nothing like the old name after all." In the 26-chapter book, he takes on the new name partway through chapter 2, and returns to his "real" name, Peter Rabbit, at the end of chapter 3. Four years later, in The Adventures of Peter Cottontail, Peter Rabbit, unhappy at his plain-sounding name, briefly changed his name to Peter Cottontail because he felt it made him sound more important. Peter Cottontail is a name temporarily assumed by a fictional rabbit named Peter Rabbit in the works of Thornton Burgess, an author from Sandwich, Massachusetts In 1910, when Burgess began his Old Mother West Wind series, the cast of animals included Peter Rabbit. For the popular Easter song, see Peter Cottontail (song). There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher until one’s cheeks burned with the silent imputation of parsimony that such close dealing implied.
